CASE STUDIES The value of medical technology for valve diseases

Raising awareness of valve diseases and treatments through video storytelling

Explaining the value of minimally invasive medical technology and procedures to a patient is never easy. They are complex subject-matter, and people who end up requiring these treatments are often already overwhelmed with the shock of their diagnosis. This is why we often recommend video storytelling to our clients in the medical technology, diagnostics or pharmaceutical industries.

In this particular example, there was limited awareness from cardiologists outside of the metropolitan areas that newer minimally invasive procedures exist for patients living with structural heart conditions.

Video production

Why choose video storytelling

As a healthcare communications agency with substantial experience in video production for clients in the in vitro diagnostics, medical technology and pharmaceutical industries, we know that video storytelling is an effective tool to digest complex concepts.

Video means less effort required from the person consuming the content who can simply sit back and watch. Video is very shareable, for instance on LinkedIn and websites. It can also be sliced and diced into shorter videos with different purposes to the original video, increasing the return on investment.

What made these videos compelling was the passion of the interventional cardiologists that were involved. They were also eager to provide more awareness around structural heart conditions and interventions. This enthusiasm was key to making the videos engaging, and a video with a passionate spokesperson is certainly more captivating.

The plan

The plan was to shoot the three prominent interventional cardiologists based in Sydney and edit the footage into compelling, short, high-quality, educational videos for patients and other healthcare professionals involved in valve disease journeys.

We chose to shoot in the hospital cath lab and the specialists’ rooms to add to the expert nature of the content. Animation footage provided by the client was included to show the intricate nature of the procedures. Video storytelling is effective to distil complex healthcare messages.

The videos have so far been used on several channels, such as microsites, the hospital’s YouTube channel and websites, which has furthered their overall reach.

Today, the client has been able to strengthen their content library for the four disease states they wanted to raise more awareness of. The videos are also useful resources to share with stakeholders, such as the hospital and the interventional cardiologists themselves.
